First time getting to Cat Ba?
How to reach the island
Cat Ba is an island off the coast of Hai Phong — there is no airport on Cat Ba itself, so every visitor crosses water at some point. The good news: it's well-connected. Direct bus + speedboat combos run from Hanoi (3.5h), Ninh Binh, and Sapa, and private cars can arrange the whole journey door-to-door.
3 ways to cross to Cat Ba (private car)
Standard ferry
Drive to Got pier on the mainland, leave the car, take the ferry as a foot passenger, then continue by taxi on Cat Ba.
Cable car (Sun World)
Drive to Phu Long cable car station, glide across the bay in ~10 min on the world's tallest cable-car towers, then continue by taxi on Cat Ba.
Drive-on ferry
Car loads directly onto the ferry — you stay in the vehicle. Drive off on the Cat Ba side and continue to your destination without changing transport.

Frequently asked questions
Bus + ferry, or private car — which one?
Bus + ferry combos are the cheapest option (from 300,000 VND) and run on a fixed schedule — best for solo travellers and backpackers. Private cars cost more but let you choose the time, ideal for families with luggage or guests arriving on off-hour flights.
Do I need to pay the bay entrance fee on the way to Cat Ba?
The bay entrance fee (120,000 VND/pax) is for tours inside Lan Ha Bay, not for transport routes. Speedboat transfers may pass through the bay zone, but standard transport tickets generally do not include this fee — you only pay it when you join a tour.
Is the sleeper bus comfortable for older travellers?
The sleeper bus has flat-bed berths with a blanket and pillow. Most older travellers find it comfortable for the 11–12 hour overnight journey from Sapa or Ha Giang. Cabin sleepers (with a private cabin door) are an upgrade worth considering if you're a light sleeper.
What's the cable car like? Worth the upgrade?
The Sun World cable car at Phu Long uses the world's tallest cable-car towers — about 10 minutes crossing with full bay views. 70,000 VND/pax surcharge (kids under 1m ride free). Most scenic crossing if you're travelling with children or first-time visitors.
How far in advance should I book?
24–48 hours ahead for buses and sleeper coaches. Same-day is usually OK for private cars subject to availability. For big groups (16-seat coach or more), give us 3–5 days' lead time so we can confirm the right vehicle.
