Getting to Cat Ba from Hanoi: The 2026 Route Guide

Most travelers arriving in Cat Ba started their day in Hanoi's Old Quarter. The route is well-trodden, the buses run on a tight schedule, and once you know which option fits your trip, the whole thing takes about three and a half hours door-to-door. This guide is what we tell guests when they email asking "is the bus okay, or should I book a private car?"

The fast version

  • Distance: ~150 km
  • Door-to-door time: 3 hours 30 minutes (with the combined bus + speedboat ticket)
  • Easiest option: Combined ticket from Old Quarter — one fare covers the bus, the boat, and the shuttle into town.
  • Cheapest option:DIY by public bus + ferry — about half the price, but a full half-day's logistics.
  • Fastest option: Private car + speedboat transfer — ~3 hours and you control the departure time.

Option 1 — Combined bus + speedboat (the default)

This is what 80% of independent travelers take. One ticket covers hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, the AC coach to Hai Phong, the 30-minute speedboat across Lan Ha Bay, and a shuttle into Cat Ba Town. You don't have to think about ferry timings or terminal transfers — the operator handles all of it.

What you actually do:

  1. Get picked up at your Old Quarter hotel (or meet at the operator's office on Tran Nhat Duat) between 7:00 AM and 1:30 PM, depending on which departure you book.
  2. Ride the bus to Hai Phong — ~2 hours via the new coastal highway.
  3. Transfer to the speedboat at Ben Binh pier. ~30 minutes across the bay direct to Cat Ba Town pier.
  4. A waiting shuttle drops you in the center of Cat Ba Town, close to most hotels.

Three daily departures, 365 days a year:

  • 07:30 from Hanoi → arrive Cat Ba ~11:30 AM
  • 10:30 from Hanoi → arrive Cat Ba ~2:00 PM
  • 14:00 from Hanoi → arrive Cat Ba ~5:00 PM

Pricing. Regular Bus (29- or 45-seat coach, comfortable AC, reclining seats): 300,000 VND/person. Limo D-Class upgrade (9- to 24-seat van, leather captain seats, Wi-Fi, USB charging): 420,000 VND/person.

Book the route directly on our Hanoi → Cat Ba transport page — that's the combined ticket and it's the one we run ourselves.

Option 2 — Private car + speedboat

Better suited for families, business travelers, or anyone who hates being on someone else's schedule. A driver picks you up at your hotel at any time you choose, takes you straight to Hai Phong, then you board the same speedboat across to Cat Ba (or a private boat if you want to splurge).

Expect 1,500,000 – 2,500,000 VND for the car portion (4-seat sedan up to 16-seat van), plus the speedboat fare per person. Worth the premium if you have luggage, kids, or a tight schedule — you skip the hotel pickup loop and can leave whenever you want.

Option 3 — Public bus + DIY ferry (budget)

Possible but rarely worth the savings. From Hanoi's Luong Yen or Gia Lam bus station, take a public coach to Hai Phong (~80,000 VND). From there, taxi or Grab to Got Pier (15–20 km from the city center, ~150,000 VND), then board the Dong Bai – Cai Vieng ferry as a foot passenger (14,000 VND). On the Cat Ba side, a 25-km local shuttle or taxi runs from Cai Vieng pier to Cat Ba Town (~100,000–150,000 VND).

Total: roughly half what the combined ticket costs, but expect 5–6 hours including transfers and waits. If you're a budget backpacker with time, fine. Otherwise the combined ticket is the better value.

Option 4 — Motorbike (for the adventurous)

Renting a motorbike in Hanoi and riding to Cat Ba is doable — plenty of travelers do it. The route runs via Highway 5 to Hai Phong (~120 km, mostly flat, fast lanes), then onto the Dong Bai ferry with your bike (44,000 VND for motorbike + 14,000 VND for passenger). From Cai Vieng pier, the ride into Cat Ba Town is about 25 km of scenic coastal road.

Honest take:the Hanoi-to-Hai Phong leg is industrial and busy with trucks. The Cat Ba side is gorgeous. If you're already a confident Vietnam rider, the second half is worth the first half. If you're new to Vietnam traffic, take the bus and rent a bike once you're on the island.

Which option to pick

For most travelers:the combined bus + speedboat at 300,000 VND. It's the right balance of comfort, speed, and price.

For families, couples carrying heavy bags, or anyone with a flight to catch: upgrade to Limo D-Class at 420,000 VND, or book a private car. Fewer stops, more legroom, faster pace.

For backpackers on a strict budget: DIY public bus + ferry. Just budget the full half-day.

For riders:rent in Hanoi only if you're confident on Vietnamese highways. Otherwise rent in Cat Ba Town once you arrive.

Arrival tips

  • Most Old Quarter hotels are within the pickup zone — the operator will collect you directly. Hotels outside the Old Quarter need to meet the bus at the office on Tran Nhat Duat.
  • The combined ticket includes one piece of luggage per person. Extras may cost a small surcharge.
  • The 07:30 morning departure is the most popular — book a day or two ahead in peak season (April–October).
  • The ferry crossing is on Lan Ha Bay, not Halong Bay. Sit on the right side of the speedboat for the better view of the limestone islands.
  • Cat Ba Town arrival drop-off is near 1/4 Street, central to most hotels. From there, taxis or local motorbike taxis (xe ôm) handle the last few hundred meters.

Onward planning

Once you arrive, the next decision is what to do with your first afternoon. The fastest way to feel like you're on the island is to head straight to the bay — most travelers do a half-day or full-day cruise the next morning. Our 3-day Cat Ba itinerary is the template we send most arriving guests, and our kayaking guide covers the option most travelers say is the highlight of the trip.
