"Should we do a day boat or an overnight cruise? And Ha Long or Lan Ha?" — that's really four questions wearing one trench coat, and travelers get sold answers to the wrong one all the time. A day trip and a night aboard are different products. Ha Long and Lan Ha are different bays. Put the two choices together and you get four very different trips at four very different prices. We operate boats on one side of that map and send guests to the other side weekly, so here's the honest matrix.

Prices are early-2026 ballparks; both bays adjust fees over time. The structural difference doesn't change: Lan Ha costs less to enter and carries far fewer boats per square kilometer of water.
Day boat: what it's actually like
A day cruise is 6–8 hours: cruise out, two or three stops — a cave or viewpoint, a kayak session, a swim — lunch on board, cruise home. It's the right call if you're short on time, traveling with young kids, prone to seasickness, or allergic to packing an overnight bag.
The difference between the bays is the traffic pattern. Ha Long's day loop runs a fixed circuit past the marquee sights — Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top island, the Luon Cave rowboats — which are spectacular and correspondingly busy; you share each stop with whoever else is on the circuit that hour. Lan Ha day boats out of Cat Ba run looser routes with more water time: kayaking through the Dark & Bright Cave, swimming at Ba Trai Dao or Van Boi, lunch at anchor in a lagoon. Fewer queues, more paddling — that's the trade, and it's why we built our full-day ECO cruise and Viet Hai village day trip the way we did.
Budget guide: a good Lan Ha day cruise runs roughly 750,000–950,000₫ per person with kayaking and lunch included; Ha Long day trips from Hanoi span a huge range depending on how much bus time is hidden in the itinerary. (If you're starting from Hanoi, do the math on hours: a "Ha Long day tour" can be seven hours of highway wrapped around four hours of bay.)
Overnight cruise: what changes when you sleep out there
Everything, honestly — and it's not the cabin. It's the clock. The day fleet works roughly 9 to 5; an overnight boat has the bay in the golden hours on either side. Dinner at anchor, squid fishing off the stern, sunrise with mist on the karsts and not an engine within earshot. Guests come back using the word "unreal" about the mornings specifically.
In Ha Long, overnight means the classic heritage-cruise product: a large fleet from budget to ultra-luxury, fixed anchorage zones, polished service, the famous sights threaded between meals. It's the definitive first-timer's Vietnam experience and the new-generation luxury boats do it beautifully.
In Lan Ha, overnight skews smaller and stranger — in the best way. Boutique boats like our Heritage Bay cruises anchor in quieter zones, and the island adds options no big fleet can offer: sleeping at a floating homestay above a fish farm, or taking a small wooden boat to the far southern bay around Dau Be. If Ha Long overnight is a hotel on water, Lan Ha overnight is a night inside a working seascape.
So which combination is yours?
Ha Long day boat — you have one day, you want the icons, and you're okay sharing them. Fine choice; manage expectations about crowds at the cave.
Ha Long overnight — you want the classic luxury-cruise experience with maximum choice of vessels. Book a small ship and it's wonderful.
Lan Ha day boat — you're based on Cat Ba (or want to be), you'd rather paddle than queue, and you want the highest scenery-per-dong ratio in either bay. This is most of our guests.
Lan Ha overnight — you want the emptiest version of the World Heritage seascape that exists, and the 6 AM sundeck moment. This is what we'd book with our own money.
And the secret fifth option: both bays, one trip. Boats from Cat Ba routinely cross the heritage-area line, and the direct Tuan Chau ferry links the two sides in under an hour — so a Lan Ha overnight followed by a Ha Long transit (or vice versa) is trivially easy to arrange. Whichever cell of the matrix you pick, one rule holds everywhere: small boat beats big boat, and early booking beats both — 2026 is a record year and summer weekends sell out first. The bay's not going anywhere. The good cabins are.
