Most visitors to Ninh Binh spend their days on boats in Trang An and Tam Coc, then wonder what to do once the sun goes down. The Reed Flag Hero (Anh Hùng Cờ Lau) live show is a good answer. It is an open-air performance in the heart of Hoa Lu Ancient Town in Ninh Binh. The modern evening venue is distinct from the historic Hoa Lu Ancient Capital temple area.
What Is the Reed Flag Hero Show?
Reed Flag Hero is an immersive historical live show that tells the story of Dinh Bo Linh. He grew up as a buffalo-herding boy who led his playmates in games with reed flags. He later ended the era of the 12 warlords, united the country, and became emperor of Dai Co Viet.
Instead of a traditional theatre, the show uses the ancient town itself as its backdrop. The performance combines acrobatics, dance, martial arts, traditional music and modern lighting effects. According to the organizers, the cast includes around 32 performers: acrobats, dancers and martial arts stunt performers.
The Story in Four Acts
Legend of Hoa Lu: Mythical lotus, bird and butterfly imagery introduces the sacred land, before peace gives way to war.
Childhood of Dinh Bo Linh: The young hero wins over a wild buffalo, is chosen as leader, and trains his reed flag army in the fields.
The Battlefield: Drums, fire acrobatics, smoke and LED swords fill the stage. The battle ends with the hero riding a horse on a zipline, and the country is united.
Festival of Unification: A joyful finale with dragon dances, a royal procession and the coronation of the emperor.

Tip: Seats are limited for each show, so book early, especially on weekends and holidays.
Why October Is a Great Time to Go
Autumn is one of the most comfortable seasons to visit Ninh Binh. Evenings are cooler than in summer, which makes an outdoor show far more enjoyable. Bring a light jacket in case the breeze picks up, and check the forecast, since the show is held outdoors.
