Getting to Cat Ba from Ninh Binh: The Direct Highway Route

Ninh Binh and Cat Ba are the two limestone-and-water destinations bookending most travelers' northern Vietnam trips. The catch: getting between them isn't one of those routes Google maps out clearly. Most travelers backtrack through Hanoi (it's a triangle, and that's a wasted leg). The direct way is cleaner and we run it daily.

The fast version

  • Distance: ~180 km (Tam Coc → Cat Ba Town via the coastal highway)
  • Door-to-door time: 4 to 4.5 hours
  • Easiest option: Combined direct bus via the coastal highway and Dong Bai ferry. No Hanoi detour.
  • Cheapest option: Public bus to Hanoi, then connect — saves ~50,000 VND but adds 2–3 hours and a transfer.

Option 1 — Direct bus via coastal highway (recommended)

The new coastal highway between Ninh Binh and Hai Phong cut the Ninh Binh → Cat Ba route from 6+ hours (via Hanoi backtrack) down to about 4.5 hours direct. The bus picks you up in Tam Coc, Trang An, or Ninh Binh City, drives east along the highway, crosses to Cat Ba via the Dong Bai – Cai Vieng ferry, and drops you in Cat Ba Town.

What you actually do:

  1. Get picked up at your accommodation in Tam Coc, Trang An, or Ninh Binh City. Pickup window depends on which departure you book.
  2. Ride the bus east along the highway — about 3 hours to the Dong Bai ferry terminal.
  3. Cross on the Dong Bai – Cai Vieng ferry (~20 minutes on the water).
  4. From Cai Vieng pier, ~45 minutes by road to Cat Ba Town.

Daily departures (Ninh Binh → Cat Ba):

  • 07:30 → arrive Cat Ba ~12:00 PM
  • 08:00 → arrive Cat Ba ~1:00 PM
  • 13:30 → arrive Cat Ba ~6:00 PM

Pricing. Regular Bus (AC, reclining seats, ferry ticket included): 300,000 VND/person. Limo D-Class upgrade (9–24 seat van, leather seats, Wi-Fi, USB): 420,000 VND/person.

Book on our Ninh Binh → Cat Ba transport page. The fare covers pickup, the bus, the ferry ticket, and the drop-off in Cat Ba Town.

Option 2 — Ninh Binh → Hanoi → Cat Ba (the long way)

The traditional route, and the one most online guides describe. From Ninh Binh, a 2-hour bus or train to Hanoi (~80,000–150,000 VND), then the standard Hanoi → Cat Ba combined bus + speedboat ticket (300,000 VND).

Total: 400,000–450,000 VND and 6–7 hours, including the layover in Hanoi. Worth it only if you want to break the trip in Hanoi for a meal and a walk through the Old Quarter.

Option 3 — Private car

For families, couples with heavy luggage, or anyone wanting full flexibility, a private car driver picks you up at your Ninh Binh accommodation and drives all the way to Cat Ba via the same coastal highway route. Expect 2,500,000–3,500,000 VND for the car plus the ferry fare. About 4 hours total.

Option 4 — Motorbike

Doable if you've been riding in Vietnam already. The coastal highway is mostly flat and well-paved, with steady traffic. Allow 4–5 hours of riding plus the 20-minute ferry. Motorbike costs 44,000 VND extra on the Dong Bai ferry.

Honest take:the route is doable but not particularly scenic — it's industrial and trucking-heavy. The scenic ride is on Cat Ba itself. Many travelers ship the rental bike ahead or just rent again on the island.

Which option to pick

For most travelers:direct bus at 300,000 VND. It saves you 2+ hours over the Hanoi backtrack and you don't have to think about timing.

For families or anyone wanting more space: Limo D-Class at 420,000 VND. Smaller groups, captain seats, fewer stops.

For people who want a half-day in Hanoi: go via Hanoi as a stopover. Otherwise, skip the detour.

Arrival tips

  • Most homestays and hotels in Tam Coc and Trang An are within our pickup zone. Confirm pickup address when you book — boutique properties down small lanes sometimes need a meeting point at the main road.
  • The morning departures (07:30 and 08:00) land you in Cat Ba with plenty of afternoon to explore. The 13:30 arrives at sunset — fine if you just want a relaxed first night.
  • Route timing can flex slightly with ferry conditions. Add 30 minutes of buffer if you have a tour or boat booked the same afternoon.

From limestone to limestone

The transition from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba is one of the most rewarding sequences in northern Vietnam — you go from limestone rising out of rice paddies to limestone rising out of the sea. Once you arrive, the natural next move is to get onto the bay. Our 3-day itinerary is the template most arriving guests follow, and the kayaking guide covers the activity most travelers say is the highlight.
