Most visitors come to Cao Bang for the thundering Ban Gioc Waterfall. But elsewhere in the province, tucked into the forest near the Chinese border, Lenin Stream offers something different: calm turquoise water, shaded trails and a chapter of Vietnamese history.
What Is Lenin Stream?
Lenin Stream sits inside the Pac Bo Historical Site, about 50–55 km from Cao Bang City. It was named by Ho Chi Minh, who returned to Vietnam through Pac Bo on 28 February 1941 after around 30 years abroad. The name honors Vladimir Lenin, and the nearby mountain was named Karl Marx Mountain. The stream begins at the Coc Bo rivulet and is considered the source of the Yen River.
Why Visit?
Emerald water: The stream is clear and cool, and its color is most vivid in the cooler months.
Peaceful atmosphere: Compared with Ban Gioc, it feels quiet and uncrowded, with forest all around.
History and nature together: You can walk the stone paths where Ho Chi Minh once worked, then visit Pac Bo Cave and Karl Marx Mountain.
Easy walking: A relaxed visit takes about 2–3 hours.
How to Get to Lenin Stream

Hanoi → Cao Bang City: Take a sleeper or limousine bus (roughly 270–350 km, depending on the route) or hire a private car.
Cao Bang City → Pac Bo: Take a taxi, private car or rented motorbike (about 1.5 hours). The road passes through karst mountains and highland villages.
At the site: Park near the entrance and follow the stone-paved path to the stream. Some routes involve short uneven sections.
Best Time to Visit
The cooler months can be pleasant for walking and photography. Water colour and access depend on recent rainfall; check local conditions before travelling.
During heavy rain, water levels and slippery paths can affect a visit. Follow site guidance and allow flexibility.
Travel Tips
- Bring your own drinking water, especially in summer.

Carry small cash bills, since small snack stands may not accept cards.
Wear shoes with good grip, as rocks can be slippery.
Overcast days are great for photos, because midday sun can cause glare on the water.
Hire a local guide if you want the historical context behind each stop.
Make It Part of Your Cao Bang Itinerary
Lenin Stream fits well into a one-day trip: Cao Bang City → Pac Bo → Lenin Stream → Pac Bo Cave. Then continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall the next day. Many travelers add both to a Cao Bang loop tour.
Lenin Stream isn't the most dramatic sight in Cao Bang, and that's part of its charm. If you want quiet nature and a meaningful story, it deserves a place on your route.
