Getting to Cat Ba from Noi Bai Airport: 2026 Arrival Playbook

You've just landed at Noi Bai. Your flight got in at 2 PM. Cat Ba is 165 km southeast — close enough to reach the same day, far enough that you have to think about timing. This is what we tell guests who email asking "can I make it tonight, or should I stay in Hanoi first?"

The fast version

  • Distance: ~165 km (Noi Bai → Cat Ba Town)
  • Door-to-door time: 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic and ferry timing
  • Same-day arrival window:Land by 12:30 PM to comfortably catch the last 14:00 Hanoi → Cat Ba departure. Later than that and you're looking at a private transfer or an overnight in Hanoi.

Decision: same-day or overnight in Hanoi?

The biggest question is timing. Cat Ba arrivals are reliable up to early evening; after that the speedboats stop running. Here's how to think about it:

  • Land before 12:00 PM: You can comfortably reach Cat Ba the same day. Either join the 14:00 combined bus + speedboat from Hanoi (arrives Cat Ba ~5 PM) or take a private transfer.
  • Land 12:00 – 4:00 PM: Private transfer is your best bet. The scheduled buses have already left. You can still reach Cat Ba by ~8 PM via private car.
  • Land after 4:00 PM:Stay overnight in Hanoi. Use the time to eat in the Old Quarter, swap currency, get a SIM, sleep properly. The next morning's 07:30 bus is the cleanest start.

Most travelers transfer from Noi Bai into the city before continuing — the metro is the budget option.

Option 1 — Airport → Old Quarter → combined bus + speedboat

This is the most common path. Two legs:

Leg 1 — Noi Bai to Old Quarter (~45 min). Three ways:

  • Grab/Taxi: 350,000–450,000 VND. Cleanest, direct to your hotel. Allow 45–60 min for traffic.
  • Airport express bus (route 86): 45,000 VND, 50–70 min. Drops near Hoan Kiem Lake — walk or short ride to your hotel.
  • Private airport transfer: ~600,000 VND pre-booked. Driver waits at arrivals with a name sign. Worth it if you have luggage or are jet-lagged.

Leg 2 — Old Quarter to Cat Ba. Catch the combined ticket from your hotel pickup. Three daily departures (07:30, 10:30, 14:00), 300,000 VND for the regular coach + speedboat or 420,000 VND for the Limo D-Class upgrade. See our Getting to Cat Ba from Hanoi guide for the full breakdown.

If you're trying to catch the 14:00: aim to be at your Hanoi hotel by 12:30 PM to drop bags, pickup window is usually 12:45–13:15. Realistic only if your flight lands by 12:00 noon.

Option 2 — Direct private transfer from Noi Bai

Skip the layover entirely. A private driver collects you at arrivals and drives straight through to Hai Phong, where you transfer to the speedboat across to Cat Ba.

Expect: 4 to 4.5 hours total, including the speedboat crossing. Price:roughly 2,500,000 – 3,500,000 VND for the car (4-seat sedan up to 16-seat van), plus speedboat fare per person. We arrange these on request — message us with your flight number and we'll time the pickup.

Best for: families with kids, travelers with significant luggage, anyone arriving outside the scheduled bus windows, or guests who just want zero transfers.

Option 3 — Overnight in Hanoi, fresh start next morning

Underrated. If your flight lands late or you're jet-lagged, spending one night in Hanoi's Old Quarter beats arriving in Cat Ba exhausted at 9 PM.

Find a hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake (within a 1-km radius is the pickup zone), book the 07:30 or 10:30 bus for the next morning, and use the evening to eat at a bun cha spot, walk the Old Quarter, and get your Vietnam SIM working. You arrive in Cat Ba mid-morning and have a full afternoon to start exploring.

Option 4 — Fly to Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong) instead

If you're booking flights and Cat Ba is your only stop, consider flying to Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) in Hai Phong rather than Noi Bai. Cat Bi is 25 km from Ben Binh speedboat terminal — a 30-minute taxi, then the 1-hour speedboat to Cat Ba.

Total door-to-door from Cat Bi: about 2 hours instead of 4–5. Cat Bi handles domestic flights from HCMC, Da Nang, and a few international flights (Bangkok, Incheon). Always check both Noi Bai and Cat Bi when you're booking flights — Cat Bi is often the smarter routing for a Cat Ba trip.

Which option to pick

Land by noon, light luggage: Grab to Old Quarter, catch the 14:00 bus. 300,000 VND, low effort, low cost.

Land afternoon, want to keep moving: Private transfer Noi Bai → Cat Ba. Pricier but eliminates timing stress.

Land evening or jet-lagged:Overnight in Hanoi. You'll have a better trip starting fresh.

Booking future flights: Check Cat Bi (Hai Phong) as an alternative to Noi Bai. Cuts the journey in half.

Airport tips

  • The official airport taxis are at the curb past the arrivals doors. Grab works at Noi Bai and is usually cheaper and easier than taxi stand pricing.
  • Vietnam e-visa or visa-on-arrival processing can add 30–60 minutes to your "arrival time." Plan timing from when you expect to clear immigration, not from when the plane lands.
  • Get a Vietnamese SIM at the airport — booths in arrivals sell tourist SIMs for ~200,000 VND. Mobile data makes the rest of the trip much easier.
  • The Old Quarter pickup zone is roughly bordered by Hoan Kiem Lake, Long Bien Bridge, and the citadel. Hotels outside this zone need to meet the bus at our office on Tran Nhat Duat.
