Three nights a week this summer, at exactly 8:30 in the evening, the whole of Cat Ba town turns toward the water. Conversations stop mid-sentence, phones come out, and for the next quarter of an hour the central bay becomes a stage — fireworks bursting low over the anchored boats, echoing off the karst walls behind the town. Across the water in Ha Long, it happens every single night. Cat Ba fireworks schedule 2026
The headline: Hai Phong is running free artistic fireworks over Cat Ba's central bay three nights a week — Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday — from April 25 to September 2, 2026, as the anchor of the island's summer season.

The show is more than rockets. On performance nights the bay hosts jet-ski and flyboard stunt teams — the organizers have been chasing a record for the most jet-skis firing fireworks simultaneously — plus low-altitude "water fireworks" that erupt from beneath the surface and bloom across the water like jellyfish. It's loud, slightly chaotic, and very Vietnamese-summer. We love it.
One honest caveat: the schedule bends to the weather. A storm warning cancels the night without much notice, and dates around big holidays sometimes get extra shows. Treat Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday as the rhythm, and confirm locally on the day — your hotel, or us, will know.
Where to watch in Cat Ba
The waterfront promenade. The obvious spot, and honestly a good one — the shows are designed to be watched from the seafront in front of the town beach. Arrive 20–30 minutes early on Saturdays; the rail fills up fast in July and August.
A rooftop or seafront café. The cafés along the harbor road sell exactly what you think they sell: a chair, a cold drink, and an unobstructed view. Worth every dong on a crowded weekend.
From the water. This is the one we'd pick, for obvious reasons. Fireworks over your head instead of in front of you, town lights glittering behind, and no crowd at all. Ha Long fireworks schedule 2026
Across the strait, Quang Ninh has gone bigger: after two seasons of weekend-only shows, Ha Long's VUI-Fest night quarter in Bai Chay now fires fireworks every night at 21:30, running about 15 minutes, as of the program announced in May 2026. The display launches near the Ha Long International Cruise Port and Sun Carnival Square, and the surrounding night market — some hundred food kiosks, DJ stages, beachside bars — makes an evening of it.

Two notes from experience. First, Quang Ninh has changed the cadence more than once — weekend-only in 2025, nightly in 2026 — so if fireworks are the reason you're timing a night in Ha Long, double-check the week you travel. Second, the best free viewpoint is simply Bai Chay beach; the best paid one is the deck of an overnight cruise moored within sight of the shore.
Can you see both in one trip?
Easily — and the timing works in your favor. Cat Ba's shows run at 20:30, Ha Long's at 21:30, and the two towns are connected by the direct Tuan Chau–Gia Luan ferry. A comfortable pattern we see guests do: two or three nights on Cat Ba catching a Tuesday or Thursday show without the Ha Long crowds, then a night in Bai Chay (or an overnight cruise) on the way out, with fireworks as the send-off.
Our practical tips
- Saturday is the big night everywhere — biggest crowds, fullest cafés. Tuesday and Thursday on Cat Ba feel almost local.
- Book water-view tables and night tours ahead in July–August. Show nights sell out first.
- Bring a light rain layer. Summer evening showers pass quickly and the show usually goes on after a delay — but standing wet for 40 minutes is a choice you only make once.
- Photographers: the water fireworks sit low, so shoot from slightly elevated ground (the road above the beach) or from a boat for clean reflections. A phone in night mode braced on a railing beats a hand-held camera.
- With kids: the jet-ski shows before the fireworks are arguably better entertainment than the fireworks themselves. Come for the whole program.
