Cat Ba is easy to enjoy, but not every decision can be improvised. Boats operate under weather restrictions, island roads demand care, seafood prices need clarifying, and many beautiful places are also homes or protected environments.
Avoiding a few common mistakes makes a trip safer, more respectful and more rewarding.
1. Do not treat Cat Ba as only a photo backdrop
Cai Beo, Viet Hai and communities around Lan Ha Bay are not open-air museums. People live, work and raise families there. Ask before taking close photographs of residents. Do not enter houses, boats, floating farms or work areas without an invitation. Keep voices low near homes and avoid blocking narrow paths for photos or videos.
Good cultural encounters begin with respect rather than observation alone.

2. Do not ignore instructions on the water
When the captain or guide asks you to wear a life jacket, remain seated or avoid an area, follow the instruction. A June 2026 safety notice from the Cat Hai authority requires passengers to wear properly fitted life jackets from boarding and throughout bay excursions. Vessels must not depart when passengers have not complied.
Do not stand on railings, jump from a boat without approval or enter crew-only areas. The crew knows the vessel and changing conditions.
3. Do not kayak or swim alone in unfamiliar conditions
Calm-looking water can conceal currents, tides, boat traffic and underwater hazards. Before kayaking:
Wear a correctly fitted life jacket and attend the safety briefing.
Stay with your group and confirm the return route.
Keep clear of moving vessels.
Do not enter caves without permission.
Tell the guide if you are not a confident swimmer.
Never swim after drinking alcohol. Do not jump from cliffs or boat decks unless a qualified operator has organised the activity and approved the location and conditions.
4. Do not argue when weather changes the itinerary
It is disappointing when kayaking, swimming or an overnight cruise changes. Arguing cannot make strong wind or rough water safe. Activities must follow approved routes and safety instructions. Read weather and cancellation terms before paying, and ask the operator to explain alternatives, refunds or date changes clearly.
5. Do not leave rubbish behind
A bottle left on a beach can enter the bay with the next tide. Cigarette ends, wet wipes and wrappers remain after visitors leave. Carry rubbish to a suitable bin, reduce single-use plastic and refill a bottle when facilities are available. Do not throw anything from a boat, including food: even organic waste can affect wildlife behaviour and water quality.

6. Do not touch, chase or feed wildlife
The Cat Ba langur is endemic and critically endangered, as described in the World Heritage evaluation. Observing an animal is not permission to approach it. Never feed monkeys or other wildlife. Feeding can change behaviour and bring animals dangerously close to people. Avoid close-range flash, recorded animal calls and pressure on a guide to enter restricted habitat. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.
7. Do not rent a motorbike beyond your ability
Scenic roads can be steep, narrow and slippery, with blind bends, buses and changing weather. Rent only if you have the appropriate licence, valid insurance and confidence in local conditions. Wear a proper helmet, test brakes and lights, slow before bends, keep clear of buses, and avoid heavy rain. Never ride after drinking or use your phone while moving. If you lack experience, choose a taxi or licensed driver.
8. Do not order seafood without confirming the price
Seafood may be priced by kilogram, portion or animal. Before the kitchen begins:
Confirm the species and unit price.
Watch the item being weighed and confirm its total weight.
Agree on the cooking method and any preparation charge.
Check prices for rice, vegetables and drinks.
Request the estimated final total.
If the explanation is unclear, choose another restaurant.

9. Do not book a tour only because it is cheapest
A low headline rate may exclude entrance tickets, kayaking, transfers, water, VAT or an English-speaking guide. It may also mean a larger group or less time on the bay. Compare the final price, boat name and capacity, group size, actual cruising hours, activity duration, meals and tickets, guide experience, safety equipment and cancellation conditions. A knowledgeable guide can add more value than decorative luxury.
10. Do not assume the most expensive option is automatically best
Higher prices may reflect better cabins, newer vessels or premium meals, but they do not guarantee a thoughtful route or capable guide. Ask what you are paying for. If kayaking, local knowledge and a small group matter most, a well-designed mid-range tour may suit you better than a large luxury boat. Choose the experience, not labels such as “deluxe” or “five-star.”
11. Do not schedule a tight connection after a cruise
Do not put a flight, train or non-refundable transfer immediately after your expected return from Lan Ha Bay. Weather, harbour instructions, ferry queues and road traffic can cause delays. Build in a buffer, especially at weekends, holidays and in unsettled weather. An extra evening on Cat Ba or in Hai Phong may be less costly than missing a flight.
12. Do not enter restricted areas
Military zones, conservation areas, private floating farms and closed trails may not always have explanations in English. Respect barriers and local officials’ instructions. Do not fly a drone, climb cliffs, enter caves or launch a kayak simply because access appears physically possible. Check current rules and obtain permission where required. Use qualified guidance for rock climbing, deep-water soloing and remote kayaking.
13. Do not rush through the island
Combining a bay cruise, forest hike, cave, beach, seafood dinner and long-distance transfer in one day makes for more movement than experience. Allow a full day for Lan Ha Bay and additional time for the island. Leave room for weather and everyday moments: breakfast near the market, coffee away from the waterfront or a slow ride through the countryside.
Travel with respect and awareness
Most avoidable mistakes begin with rushing, assuming or ignoring local guidance. Slow down, ask before acting, confirm prices and inclusions, follow safety instructions and leave natural places undisturbed. You do not need to travel perfectly; you can help ensure the island, bay and communities remain healthy after your visit.
