A Hanoi–Cat Ba bus ticket covers more than a seat. It covers a road journey, a sea crossing and the ride into Cat Ba Town, and how those stages connect depends on the vehicle you choose. Read the vehicle line, not just the route name, because the number of times you change vehicle runs from none to two.

Details come from our Hanoi to Cat Ba and Cat Ba to Hanoi listings, checked on 1 November 2026. Prices and timetables change, so the route page always shows the current fare for your date.

The three tickets compared

Ticket Stages Changes of vehicle Listed crossing
Regular Bus 45-seat (Speedboat) Bus, speedboat, shuttle bus Two Speedboat
Bus 45-seat + Cable Car Bus, cable car, bus Two Sun World cable car at Phu Long
Limousine Bus (Drive-on Ferry) One vehicle throughout None Drive-on ferry; you stay in the vehicle

The fare includes the crossing shown on each ticket. On the regular bus, that means the bus to Hai Phong, the speedboat and the shuttle into town. Do not assume that a different vehicle uses the same crossing.

What the fare includes

Across these tickets, the route listing includes:

  • Pickup as listed for your selected vehicle.
  • Luggage.
  • The crossing shown on your ticket.
  • Drop-off at Cat Ba Town centre.

Meals, personal expenses and tips are not included. The coaches list free water on board, and the limousine lists a USB charging point at every seat.

Large bags are worth raising early. Luggage is included, but tell us the number and size of your bags, and any oversized items, before you book. We can then confirm the right vehicle and any additional cost.

Where the handovers happen

Pickup. Use the address on your selected vehicle. All three tickets list 214 Tran Quang Khai or your Old Quarter hotel. Hotel pickup applies to the services that list it, and airport or other locations need a separate transfer. Send your accommodation address when you book, and check where to wait: collection can begin before the published departure time.

The crossing. On the speedboat and cable-car tickets, you leave the first vehicle and continue on another service. Keep your phone, passport and valuables in a small bag on you, and check your seat before each change. Follow the crew’s instructions on where bags go and when to board.

The island end. The fare ends at Cat Ba Town centre. If you are staying elsewhere on the island, ask before booking how you will reach your accommodation, because it may be a separate journey.

Choosing between them

Choose the speedboat ticket for the widest choice of departure times.

Choose the cable car if the crossing itself interests you. It lists about ten minutes over the water, but only two departures a day. Check operating dates before you book, as our cable car schedule guide lists a Tuesday closure under the current timetable.

Choose the limousine if you want to avoid changing vehicles, for example with several bags, young children or anyone who finds transfers hard. It runs once each way, in the morning from Hanoi and at midday from Cat Ba, so the timetable has to suit you. Booking for today is an availability request, and sales for tomorrow stop at 15:00 Vietnam time.

The return is a separate choice

A return journey is not always the same trip in reverse. Cat Ba to Hanoi lists the speedboat bus and the limousine, but no cable-car ticket, so choose each direction on its own. The Cat Ba pickup is at your accommodation, and Hanoi drop-off is at the listed office or your Old Quarter hotel.

If you are leaving after a boat trip, check the timing first: our listed full-day tours finish after the last listed Hanoi bus.

Quick answers

Is the speedboat or cable car charged separately?

Not on these tickets: the crossing in your ticket’s listed inclusions is part of the service. Check it on your confirmation. If you are buying a different service or arranging your own connection, check what it includes.

Does “door to door” apply to every ticket?

No. Of these three tickets, only the limousine keeps you in one vehicle. Each ticket has its own pickup and drop-off points, so use the ones shown for your vehicle.
